its like now
50 portrait subjects in an installation of 160 paintings and an accompanying stop-motion 'animated painting' completed in a 60 day period.
First exhibited in temporary exhibition space, Artbox, Christchurch, 2014.
its like now concluded a year-long project that began with ‘portraits’ of Christchurch city and environs devastated by the 2011 earthquake. The 10 landscape paintings became the 5 billboard and postcard touring exhibition, Wish You Were Here, with installations in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. its like now presents an incomplete portrait of a cross-section of Christchurch's arts community in a self-selecting, non-hierarchical, and entirely democratic collective portrait. The installation warmly acknowledges the tireless, often faceless creative workers who made a hugely beneficial and important contribution to the community. of the recovering city.
An invitation to submit a 30 second video ‘selfie’ was sent out to artists, writers, curators, museum directors, gallerists and gallery workers, paid and volunteer. The selfies ranged from the conceptual to the serious and playful, and provided engaging raw material for the work. Everyone who responded is represented.
All portraits oil on board, 60 x 45cm.
