its like now – about
Julia Holden talks about the making of its like now. Film credit Elizabeth Guthrey, 2014.
The its like now installation presents an incomplete portrait of some of the Christchurch arts community, warmly acknowledging the tireless, often faceless workers who make up this recovering city’s creative arts community in a self-selecting, non-hierarchical, and entirely democratic collective portrait. An invitation to submit a 30 second video ‘selfie’ was sent out to artists, writers, curators, museum directors, gallerists and gallery workers, paid and volunteer. The selfies sent in ranged from the conceptual to the serious and playful, and provided engaging raw material for the work. Some respondents were known to the artist and some were not, and some declined to participate. Everyone who responded is represented here.
