Present Tense, at the Inconvenience Store
Present Tense extends the intentions of last year’s Wish You Were Here postcard series with a suite of 10 new paintings depicting post-quake Christchurch. 5 of the 10 contemporary Christchurch ‘portraits’ comprise a billboard installation staged in Auckland at the beginning of June 2014.
Visitors to Present Tense, the week-long installation of works at GapFiller’s pop-up space, The Inconvenience Store, were invited to nominate 5 of the 10 paintings to best represent ‘us’ and the Christchurch we live in today. Their votes determined which images were used for the #WishYouWereHereChch billboards. I then invited people to choose an image that was personally meaningful and the results can be seen here: Present Tense playlist
45 donors generously contributed $5,000 through the Arts Foundation’s crowdsourcing site, Boosted, to cover the billboard printing and installation costs. For full list of donors and more information please visit: http://www.boosted.org.nz/projects/wish-you-were-here

The Big Egg Hunt NZ
Alongside, and complimentary to this series I also painted one of the 100 eggs created by artists and designers around New Zealand for the Starship Foundation Children’s Hospital fundraiser, The Big Egg Hunt NZ. Titled A Shell of Her Former Self, the egg was auctioned at the black tie Grand Gala and Auction in Auckland on 16 April, raising $8,000 of the $163,000 reached on the night. It has been a pleasure to contribute towards this very worthwhile cause.
Jo enjoyed finding the eggs around Christchurch and sent me this video of the egg in situ at Cathedral Square before it was moved to the Christchurch City Council Building.
Jo also sent in these images taken on a very sunny Christchurch day. The egg is painted in Resene exterior house paints expressly so that it could be placed in an outdoor setting. I am pleased to have received Jo’s photos as I didn’t get the chance to get around and see the eggs myself!
A Press photographer sent in this image to Elena Keith, The Big Egg Hunt NZ coordinator, taken outside Christchurch City Council offices. Egg photobomb!
Below are images of the egg taken at my temporary studio at Sumner
